Delight Yourself In The Lord

Psalm 37:4 (NKJV)

"Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart."

This is one of my favorite verses, Psalm 37:4, “Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.”  Once again, here’s an expectation for us as Christians.  We are told to ‘delight’ ourselves in the Lord.  Our relationship with the Lord ought to bring us more joy, satisfaction, and pleasure than any other relationship, activity, or material possession that we have in our life.  It’s a simple question, “What brings us delight?”

It ought to be Jesus and if not, we have some adjustments to make.

If this is not the case, then we must take corrective action to adjust our life, attitude and actions whereby our delight is in the Lord.  Like any relationship, it takes time, energy and commitment.  It requires us to spend intimate time with God and allow Him to show us our situation from His perspective.  This will result in us seeing things as God sees them.

As this occurs, it is then that we realize that we will desire the same things God heart desires.  The pressing things on God’s heart will be the pressing things on our heart.  It’s not about us giving God our laundry list of desires and kick back to see how He’s going to answer such a list but rather lining up our desires with His desires because we have found our delight in Him.

I was able to have breakfast yesterday morning with dear friends, a couple, and she has brain cancer.   I wasn’t sure if she (they) would be able to make it.  Because of the recent diagnosis that the chemo treatment did not work and the tumor has increased in size, she realizes that she may not be healed by a miracle and/or medicine.

Nonetheless, I’ve never met anyone who so embraces and understands what it means to delight in the Lord and is at peace with His will be done.  As Blackaby says, “This great qualifier prevents us from asking out of selfishness.”  As we find joy and satisfaction in the Lord, we will see what is truly important.  Therefore, we will long for these things as does the Father.  Let us delight ourselves in the Lord this day and acquire a heart for God.
