The Beatitudes Part 3

Matthew 5:5 (NKJV)

"Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth."

Meek, what an interesting word, one that is not used much in modern times. I remember my grandfather using meek when talking about horse training. He said that he did not break horses, he 'meeked' them. This intrigued me and led me on a search regarding the meaning of meek. Too often we think of the word meek as being weak.

We get an image in our mind of a little guy kind of trembling in the corner when the big guys come in the room. This is actually a completely wrong interpretation of the word meek. According to Webster's 1828 dictionary the word meek means, mild of temper; soft; gentle; not easily provoked or irritated."

My grandpa's definition was 'power under control'. Jesus is telling us that we still have power power of choice power of free will. We are told in this verse that we are blessed when we keep that power under control or better yet yield to Gods control.

The best horse I ever had was one that trusted me and allowed me to impose my will on her. I had more success roping on this horse because of the trust and meekness of this horse. She still had a brain so to speak she was fast and powerful and had a great sense. I also trusted her and knew she would do what was needed because of her 'meekness'.

She is a great example to me of what God asks of me in this verse. Not to be weak but to be meek to submit my will to His will. That is when we can experience more of His blessings and He will put us to doing more of His work knowing that we will be able to handle it.

I believe this is part of what inheriting the earth is about; when we are established on such a footing God will place more in our hands. And of course the new earth.
