The Beatitudes Part 9

Matthew 5:11 (NKJV)

"Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for my sake."

This verse seems fairly self-explanatory. When we look at it closely, we can see that we are warned; we will be reviled and persecuted because of Christ. We have already discussed persecution but let's look at the word revile. According to the 1828 version of Webster's dictionary, the word revile is a contemptuous language; in other words, when people speak against you.

The MLT translates it to say when people speak evil against you. I would submit that it is even less than speaking evil. When people call you a religious nut, or something along those lines, that fits in the definition of revile.

We are warned that it's not a matter of 'IF' this happens, but 'WHEN'. It will happen. Jesus stated that the world hated Him first.

Why do we think it would be different for us? This is similar to the previous verse we discussed. The difference here is that this is because of Jesus directly. Many attempt to live a righteous life but exclude Jesus.

We know that doesn't work so well. I believe this verse is making it clear that the righteous live for Christ and will face problems from the world because of that. I have seen similar situations in the agricultural world. We all have. If you are in the Ag business, there are those that think we are just 'dumb ole farmers'.

We all know that is far from true, but it happens. Jesus tells us we can take comfort; we are blessed when people treat us this way because of Him.

I know this doesn't make things easier but God didn't promise easy. Yet, He did promise we could have peace through Him.
